A Security Deposit For a Sublet

… Dov Treiman, editor of The Housing Court Reporter, said there is nothing wrong with requiring a sublet tenant to furnish a security deposit.

But, Mr. Treiman said, if the letter writer is a rent-stabilized tenant, she may not charge the subtenant more than 10 percent above the rent she is paying, and must get the landlord’s consent to the sublet.
