Hi my name is Raquel Beckford, and I am a Raymond “Hap” Harrison Scholarship recipient from 2012.
Q. How was receiving the scholarship changed your life?
A. The scholarship has changed my life. I was actually just speaking to a friend before I got here about how Adam has been both financially supportive but also in a mentorship capacity and I always find myself coming back here every summer, every Christmas, every break that I have from school when I was in college. I always found myself back here because I am eternally grateful for what he’s done for me. Being that working for Adam was my first job, he definitely gave me experience that I couldn’t have gotten elsewhere. Many people start their first jobs in fast food or retail and to have had an experience like this at such a young age, eighteen back then, has really propelled me to go for the gold and strive to achieve more and to go for bigger, more lucrative jobs.
Q. What has Adam Leitman Bailey taught you?
A. Adam has taught me tenacity, he’s taught me how to be courageous, how to give tough love, how to be persistent, diligent, hardworking, and how to have a personality while doing so.
Q. What are your plans for the future?
A. So, I’m actually teaching, I started teaching about a month ago at a charter school in the South Bronx, so I’m a kindergarten teacher as of now, and I’ll be starting grad school in August to get my Masters in Special Education and K-6. I’m not sure what comes after that but this is where I am now, at 22.
Q. Final Thoughts.
A. Thank you Adam! I love you!
