“I’ve Been Treated as a Professional and an Attorney Since Day One”
My name is Kevin Chan. I’m a third-year law student and currently, a legal extern at Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C. for the Fall 2017 semester. I work with the attorneys in the transactions group. As a legal extern here I have direct interactions with the attorneys in the transactions group. I have been treated as a professional and an attorney since day one. I’ve been given meaningful work throughout the whole semester. It’s been great. It’s been a very positive and friendly environment. The attorneys always make effort to take some time out of their day to teach me different things that I’m working on and just checking up on me on a daily basis. On the residential side, I’ve assisted with conducting due diligence and drafting purchase and sale contracts, leases, and other agreements. On the commercial side, I’ve assisted with preparing the lease abstracts, actual lease agreements, and helping review all agreements. All those tasks were very meaningful to me and provided a lot of insight on real estate transactions.
One of my proudest accomplishments was working on a commercial deal where we represented a client who was renting out space to a small business. In this process, I was able to basically oversee the entire process from A-Z from drafting the initial lease agreement and seeing it through to the final draft and it also included direct client interaction. That was pretty meaningful to me because I was able to run an entire process myself with supervision, and I learned a lot from that.
Adam Leitman Bailey, P.C. has been unique and sets itself apart from other firms that I’ve worked with in the past basically due to the attorney’s willingness and proactive-ness in trying to make sure that the interns and externs are actually learning and getting meaningful work.I believe that makes the experience much more beneficial to both parties and it’s been a great experience so far.
I would say take advantage of the vast resources at this firm. There are a lot of attorneys with different areas of expertise in real estate and all of them are willing to help and the best way to get the best experience is to be proactive about it. You will take away something very valuable from it.
